I’m a Singaporean-born daughter to a Sri Lankan father and American mother. My mother loved wearing makeup and wouldn’t start her day without putting anything on. I watched in awe the transformation that occurred before my eyes everyday. My first makeup kit was a Faber Castell box of 24 Oil Pastels when I was about 5 years old. The pastels were so creamy that I would blend them on my cheeks, lips and eyes to 'design my looks'. My mother decided to give me her old Chanel and Guerlain makeup to play. I loved the beautiful packaging and the scents of each one. I remember seeing the round box of colorful balls of the Guerlain Pearl Face Powder for the first time. I was in love, but this was one box I couldn’t touch! In Asia, beauty was for the very fair skinned. My best friend was tall and blessed with an incredible figure. But she struggled with her gorgeous deep skin tone. I don’t think she ever realized how beautiful she was because she didn’t fit into society’s idea of beauty. In contrast, I’m 5’2”, heavier set with green eyes, tanned skin and a bump on my nose. I never felt beautiful either because I was insecure about my body and I hated my nose. My mother would say that my nose was character building, but that is code for ‘you’ll find a way to get over your hump’. That was true. At some point, I realized that I could manipulate makeup to draw attention to my eyes and away from my nose. That made me see makeup in a very different light. It wasn’t only about the fun colors and form of expression anymore. It became the ability to turn a perceived negative into a positive. This was a huge game changer for me. I realized my passion was not to change the way people looked, but to change the way they looked at themselves. So I decided to pursue a career in Makeup Artistry. I trained at the Academy of Makeup, and Biba Hairdressing Academy in Melbourne, Australia, and the Vidal Sassoon Academy in Toronto. The combination of hair and makeup skills catapulted me into the world of TV advertising. I was fortunate to work as Key Hair and Makeup Artist for the Burlington Coat Factory Campaigns in NYC. The pastels were so creamy that I would blend them on my cheeks, lips and eyes to 'design my looks'. My mother (who wouldn't start her day without her full face of makeup) decided it was time to give me her old Chanel and Guerlain makeup to play with instead. But it would be a longtime before I learned there was a job out there called "Makeup Artistry". I have a bump on my nose which kids used to make fun of in school. This caused me to feel insecure about my looks. As I got older, I realized that if I could draw attention to my eyes, it would take attention away from my nose. That made me see makeup in a very different light. It wasn’t only about the fun colors and form of expression anymore. It became the ability to turn a perceived negative into a positive. This was a huge game changer for me. I realized I could help other people see themselves in a more positive way too. So I decided to pursue a career in hair and makeup design. Along the way I met my husband and together with our two little boys, we travel the globe for his work. Living and working abroad has made me a better makeup artist. It has allowed me to embrace the rich cultures and appreciate beauty from around the globe. It has taught me humility and the value of adapting to a changing environment. These experiences bring a unique flavor to my creative vision. Covid-19 has given me the fortuity to refine my protocol for hygiene and safety standards. Right now, this has become the most important part of my job. Keeping my clients and my family safe. It has also inspired me to create innovative ways to continue nurturing my clients.
